Following the decree of expulsion, the city – which for nearly 250 years had accommodated the Jews and by this time considered them an integral part of its population – was required to resign itself reluctantly to follow orders. Faced with the Senate, the city was no longer able to defend its Jews, people who had been born in the city, had worked there, and whose strong traditions and ancient laws tied them there.
